Netflix is set to dive deeper into the world of sports documentaries with its latest series, Starting 5, premiering on October 9, 2024. The 10-part series will provide fans with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at five of the NBA’s brightest stars. This new venture continues Netflix’s trend of capturing compelling sports stories and offering a unique glimpse into the lives of elite athletes as they navigate the pressures of competition, fame, and personal challenges.

A Closer Look at the Players

The Starting 5 documentary will focus on some of the NBA's most recognizable names, each with a unique storyline and contribution to the sport:

  • LeBron James enters his 21st season, battling the physical demands of aging while continuing to lead the Los Angeles Lakers.

  • Jimmy Butler demonstrates his tenacity and leadership, propelling the Miami Heat with his trademark grit and competitive drive, among ongoing drama with Miami Heat legend & President Pat Riley.

  • Anthony Edwards, the young superstar for the Minnesota Timberwolves, showcases his rise to becoming one of the most electrifying players in the league.

  • Domantas Sabonis, a versatile center for the Sacramento Kings, anchors his team with his all-around game and leadership.

  • Jayson Tatum, aiming for the Boston Celtics' 18th championship, leads the franchise in their quest for another title.

Each player’s journey is captured both on and off the court, highlighting not only their basketball skills but also the personal sacrifices and challenges they faced to maintain their status as the faces of the NBA.

Production Powerhouses Behind Starting 5

Starting 5 is not just a typical sports documentary but a major collaboration of some of the best producers in the entertainment industry. The production team, all well-known for their previous works in sports and entertainment, includes:

  • UNINTERRUPTED (co-founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter) continues its strong partnership with Netflix, having already produced series such as The Redeem Team and Neymar: The Perfect Chaos.

  • Higher Ground Productions (founded by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama) brings their experience from working on the Olympic men’s basketball series and other successful Netflix projects like Working: What We Do All Day.

  • Omaha Productions, lead by Peyton Manning, contributes its expertise from producing popular sports content, such as the hit series Quarterback.

Why would so many production powerhouses work together? Simple. There is an immensely vast market for sports documentaries and there are tons of examples to prove it. Sports continues to drive viewership, especially in non-sports industries, like streaming. The amount of sports-related content available on streaming platforms is steadily increasing with no plans of slowing down.

Cultural & Business Impact

The rise of sports documentaries has played a significant role in deepening fan engagement. Following in the footsteps of successful player-driven series like Quarterback and Receiver, Starting 5 has the potential to further solidify Netflix’s status as a major player in the sports content world. By giving fans a behind-the-scenes view of the players’ personal and professional lives, Netflix is tapping into the emotional and narrative-driven side of sports fandom that goes far beyond stats and highlights. From a business perspective, this series continues Netflix’s successful push into the live sports and sports documentary space, now venturing into the NBA. The NBA’s global popularity combined with the personal stories of the athletes will boost viewership across multiple regions and generate significant revenue for everyone involved.

As Netflix continues to expand its portfolio of sports content, Starting 5 stands out as a compelling example of how sports storytelling can transcend the game itself. By blending personal narratives, athletic achievement, and high-quality production, the series is set to captivate a wide audience and further elevate Netflix's presence in the sports documentary genre.
